Bhimrao Ambedkar on Article 370

Article 370 of the Indian Constitution granted special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, had expressed his views on Article 370 during the drafting of the Constitution.

Ambedkar was initially in favor of Article 370, as he believed that the state of Jammu and Kashmir should be given a special status due to its unique history and demographics. However, he later changed his stance and opposed the article, citing reasons such as the potential for the creation of a separate nation within a nation, and the lack of integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India.

In a speech to the Constituent Assembly in 1949, Ambedkar argued that Article 370 was temporary and should eventually be removed. He said, “The sooner Article 370 is removed, the better it would be for India and Jammu and Kashmir.”

Ambedkar believed that the removal of Article 370 would help to integrate Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India, and would provide equal rights to all citizens of India, including those living in Jammu and Kashmir. His views on the matter were in line with his broader philosophy of social justice and equality for all.
