Bhimabai Sakpal

Bhimabai Sakpal was the mother of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, who was a prominent social reformer, jurist, and politician in India. Bhimabai Sakpal was born in a Mahar family, which was considered to be an untouchable caste at that time, in the town of Ambadawe in Maharashtra, India.

Bhimabai Sakpal was married to Ramji Maloji Sakpal, who was also from the Mahar community. The couple had several children, including Bhimrao Ambedkar, who went on to become one of the most prominent leaders of the Dalit community in India.

Bhimabai Sakpal was a strong influence on Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, and played a key role in his early education and upbringing. Despite facing significant social and economic challenges as a member of the untouchable caste, Bhimabai Sakpal encouraged her son to pursue education and helped him to overcome the obstacles he faced in his pursuit of knowledge.

Bhimabai Sakpal passed away when Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was just 15 years old, but her legacy lived on through her son’s work as a social reformer and champion of the rights of Dalits and other marginalized communities in India. Today, Bhimabai Sakpal is remembered as a source of inspiration for many who have fought against caste-based discrimination and oppression in India.
